I do not agree that project work is the best form of assessment.

Though we have to accept the fact that we have to learn to work and strive as a team, however, in every project work, there is definitely some members contributing more which I feel that it is unfair as the assessment will be base on the whole group.

Project work will also encourages some people to sit back and relax because they know that someone in the group will help do their part if they say that they are uncertain about what they have to do. After all, the teachers judged the project base on the whole group, therefore it may be unfair to those who can strive better on their own.

I would like to comment on mango&strawberry's comment.

I agree with his/her statement which says project helps to build up teamwork.

When doing a project, we need to listen to what the other group members have to say while at the same time, we have to voice out our opinion.

When met with a difficulty, all the group members will have to work together to overcome it.

Thus, its very true to say that project helps promote teamwork.

I disagree that project work is the best form of assessment.

There are definitely some members in a group that will contribute more than the others. During the presentation however, it is unlikely that the teacher would be able to see who did most of the work. In some cases, the free riders may be more outspoken than the others; the lecturer may get the wrong impression that he or she did most of the work.

This would be very unfair to the group members who are actually doing the work, as the free riders will also claim credit for the project work.

Like Cuixia mentioned, project work is a good form of assessment on how a person work in a team due to teamwork and such, but it is clearly not the best form of assessment.

I do not agree that project work is the best form of assessment.

Like what Cuixia has mentioned, doing projects together will build up teamwork. However, it is not the best form of assessment because there are certainly some of the group members who do not do as much work as the others.

If the free riders have better presentation skills, then the teacher may think that they are the ones doing the majority of the work.

Therefore, it is hard to be fair in project works and is definitely not the best form of assessment.

Wow I see this is a hot topic..

Well yeah, I guess project work isn't the fairest form of assessing student's work, with majority of the reasons in the above comments.

But, it is a very good way of learning and experiencing. The kind of people you have in your school projects aren't restricted to school only. You will meet the same kind of people when you have a career, and it is your experience in dealing with school projects that will help you through your time at work.

It is this reason that I believe project work is critical, although not the best form of assessment. Hence it would be wise to give an appropriate amount of emphasis on projects, but not too much.

What assesment would you be refering to? Assesing what? Character? Capabilities? or simply Academical knowledge?

Project work is the biggest joke I have seen so far, it is unfair and literally biased. Is it also a great source of 'class-drama', so much so that we could probably make a serial revolving on the "Dramas of Project Work". *hah*

I think everyone has pointed out, and I am too lazy so I won't restate those points, that project work does not reflect truly on one's true capabilities.

Maybe project work once or twice a year would be good, if not simply for the experience of it.

Looking at how it is now, project work seems to be the lecturers' easy way out on assesing students. Why go through 1 at a time when you grade 5 at one go huh?

    Just my opinion though. =)

I do not agree that project work is the best assessment.

Project work may be able to allow people to experience the difficulties with dealing with people relationship. However, project work are not marked based on individual's contributions. Those that did alot would not want to make trouble and would not tell the teacher.
Thus some people may take advantage of this situation and leave most of the works to the ones that are willing to do.

I totally disagree with this statement. Project work is not the best form of assessment.

Like what many others have said, the lecturer/tutor assessing would not know who did the most and who did not contribute. The grading will most probably be based on presentation and therefore, it will be an advantage to the better speaker, who might be a freerider.

Although project work is a good way to gain experience, it is an unfair way of assessing. The member who contibuted the most and spent many nights, forgoing sleep, doing his/her part, or even more than his/her part, might not get the grades that he/she deserved. In fact, it is possible for he/she to be ranked the lowest among the team members.

Therefore, I feel that project work is NOT the best way of assessing students, unless there is a way to ensure that everyone contirbutes equally or that the lecturer/tutor know exactly and accurately who played their part well.

Wow. If only the heads would take our comments about pw seriously and abolish it. As can be seen, pw is definitely unpopular among students, including yours truly. I do not agree that pw is the best form of assessment. It is very taxing in that group members have to meet up and spend much time coming to a uniform decision. Individual work is much faster in a sense, even with the workload weighing soley on one's shoulders. Timing would be flexible according to one's needs and there is no need to take into account others' views to come to a decision. Sure, pw does teach values of teamwork, decison making, management and tolerance etc. However, it also breeds animosity and discontentment. Thus, pw is really not the best form of assessment.

project work is not a good choice of assessment. its time consuming, people having different views will conflict against each other. its unfair to a certain extent as some put in more effort than others, but end up getting the same result. This is definitely not what we ourselves can achieve. thus i feel that it is not a good way of assessment .
